Phnom Penh Accommodation Guide | 15 Best Hotels Budget to 5-Star

Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s royal city, sits at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac rivers. It may lack the millennium-old stone wonders of Angkor Wat, but it possesses another kind of Southeast Asian capital charm that captivates visitors. French colonial architecture intertwines with Khmer traditional style, the Royal Palace’s golden roofs gleam in the sunlight, riverside breezes dispel the equatorial heat, and the aroma of grilled meats at the night market mixed with the sound of tuk-tuks on the streets forms the most authentic daily life of Phnom Penh.

Practical Travel Information for Phnom Penh

Best Time to Visit

Phnom Penh has a tropical monsoon climate, divided into dry and rainy seasons. November to February is the best time to visit, with relatively cool temperatures (25-30°C) and little rainfall — very comfortable. March to May is the hot season, when temperatures can soar to 40°C — not recommended. June to October is the rainy season. While afternoon downpours are common, they usually don’t last all day, and temperatures drop after the rain. If you don’t mind getting wet, it’s actually fine, and hotel prices are notably cheaper during this period.

Getting Around

Phnom Penh offers several transportation options. Tuk-tuks are the most common mode of transport, costing around USD 1-3 for short trips — remember to agree on the price before getting in. Even more convenient is using Grab or PassApp to call a ride, with transparent pricing and no risk of being overcharged — we recommend downloading one of these apps. Central Phnom Penh isn’t too large, and walking between major attractions is feasible, though taking a ride is more comfortable during the midday heat. For longer distances, you can also rent a scooter or hire a car with driver.

Currency & Payment

Cambodia uses both US Dollars (USD) and Cambodian Riel (KHR). USD is accepted virtually everywhere. Change under USD 1 will be given in Riel, at an exchange rate of approximately 1 USD = 4,000 KHR. We recommend exchanging for US dollar cash before your trip, as local ATM withdrawal fees are relatively high. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and large restaurants, but small shops and markets are primarily cash-based.

Important Notes

Phnom Penh is generally safe, but in tourist areas, be mindful of pickpockets — especially at Central Market and the night market where crowds gather. Keep your phone and bags secure while on tuk-tuks, and don’t hang them outside. When visiting the Royal Palace and temples, dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered. Tap water is not safe to drink; buy bottled water instead. Finally, Cambodia has a tipping culture — giving USD 1 to hotel bellhops and housekeeping is standard practice.
